Aesculapian Veterinary Services

Services

The Aesculapian Veterinary Service has provided medical and surgical care for pets and livestock in Northern Vermont and New York since its inception. Over the last six years, Dr. Thompson has worked to expand his expertise in the fields of veterinary acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, utilizing both Eastern and Western modalities to treat a wide array of medical issues. Cattle, horses, dogs and cats comprise most of the patient load for Drs. Thompson and Bond, but their caseload also includes llamas, alpacas, guineas pigs and other “pocket pets”, pigs, sheep and goats.

Laser Surgery

Our clinic is one of few in Vermont to offer laser surgical techniques for soft tissue surgery, including all spays, neuters and declaws (onychectomies). The carbon dioxide laser replaces the scalpel in most cases, creating less post-operative pain and swelling, as small blood vessels and nerves endings are sealed as the laser cuts. Other common surgical procedures for which the laser is utilized are tumor resection and extreme toenail overgrowth.

Acupuncture

Since 2003, Dr. Thompson has complemented traditional Western therapy with acupuncture, including dry needling, electro-acupuncture, moxibustion and aquapuncture. While certified by the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society since 2003, he has continued to elevate the art and science through advanced certification and Fellowship in The American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture and lecturing for the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine in Florida and China. Dr. Bond has begun work toward certification in veterinary acupuncture.

Herbal Pharmacy

Chinese herbal medicine further complements the use of acupuncture and Western medical services at AVS. Dr. Thompson is nearing completion for certification in Chinese Veterinary Herbology by both IVAS and the Chi Institute. All effort to assure the safety and efficacy of our Chinese herbal medications are taken--only reputable suppliers with the highest standards of quality control are utilized. AVS has treated such diseases as fractures, cancer, gastric ulcers, diabetes and arthritis. While not all cases can be treated solely with Chinese herbals, many can. When needed, pharmaceuticals are, of course, required and used.
